William Lewis, born 1827 was still at Neuadd in Census 1851 (born Llangadock) as 'Journeyman Shoemaker'. He was not there at Census 1861; he may have died, or gone elsewhere. I suggest you try the name via 'Genes Reunited' for the various subsequent Censuses. I'm not familiar with family of surname LEWIS.

Glansevin Mill
Posted by Lloyd Evans on 12/2/2013, 3:24 pm

The attached photograph is of Glansevin Mill, Llangadog and appears in a recently published book titled 'Byw yn y Wlad' published by Y Lolfa. The notes accompanying the photograph state that it was taken in 1885 and that the miller in the photograph is William Jones who was my great grandfather. At that time of the photograph the mill was part of the Glansevin Estate of the Lloyd family. My grandfather became the miller in 1880 and remained in post until his death in 1924. The tenancy of the mill then passed to his son John (Jack) Jones and he was the miller until 1943 when the Glansevin Estate was broken up and the mill was sold to the Davies family whose descendants still reside at the mill although it no longer operates as a mill and there is very little to show that it ever was a mill except for an old grinding stone that leans forlornly against a wall as can be seen in the second attached photograph I took on a recent visit. Do any of the older residents of Llangadog or viewers of this site have any recollections or stories of Glansevin Mill when it was a working corn mill?

Would Dan y Coed by 'Dan yr Allt' where Jack and Olwen lived in the 1930s with Red Head chilren Gerald and Mattie, and later with Grandmother after the parents died. Jack Dan'rallt had a water wheel generating electricity for charging wireless batteries and for electric light for Pont Aber Inn.
'Pandy' is the house near to Pontaber - Restored as a dwelling after 1960 or later after the buildings did a stint as a 'Slaughter House' by John Thomas (Penygraig as Farmer and Butcher)in the late 1920 from 1923-4 to late 1930s. It had been attached to Penygraig farm (sold to D Jones, Llwynrhoser in mid 1950s who, sometime in 1960s or later sold Pandy and garden for around £20,000 after when it was 'restored' to original use as dwelling with outhouses. [Being in the dip, it seldom had sun.]

David D. Thomas - family history
Posted by Hugh Thomas on 5/8/2012, 11:56 pm

I am trying to trace my great-great-grandfather, David Thomas (b. 1832 Langadog/Llangadock. Died 1907, Gibea cemetery, Brynaman).

He married Margaret, maiden name unknown. She was born in 1832, presumably from Llangadog. At some point, they migrated to Brynaman in search of work.

As David and Margaret were born before the 1837 state system, their records may be in Llangadog parish records. Can anyone help?

Sincerely,

Hugh Thomas

Hi Hugh. Are you Berian's son, Miriam's grandon? I'm Eurof's daughter, Margaret Jane's grandaughter, Miriam's sister.
But Evan Thomas and Margaret Thomas are buried in Gibea, and David Thomas and Anne Williams were Evan's parents in Gwynfe

Queen's Square
Posted by Lloyd Evans on 7/3/2012, 2:42 pm

Visitors to this site especially Huw and Gordon Jones, will be interested in this old postcard dated from the 1950/1960 era. This shows Queen's Square as it was in that period. Of particular interest is that it shows 'Y Sqwar' as I remember it especially Mrs. Gravelles' shop in the centre and Freddie Morgan's butcher shop to the right of her shop. Happy memories!

Ah Lloyd, you bring back to me so many wonderful memories of Queen's Square. That shop must have been the inspiration for "Open All Hours" as I well remember the knock on the back door any time from 6am until 11pm. Summer has never been the same without the holiday fun that we all shared.

Dw i'n cofio'r siop mamgu (Mrs Gravelle) yn dda iawn wrth gwrs. Gordon & I have very happy memories of our summer holidays in Llangadog. I also have memories of Freddie & Myfi and their butchers and have particularly fond memories of Lloyd & his brother, the Walters boys, Richard Morgan and many other friends.

In another thread, Lloyd talks about Llangadog School. My Great-grandfather (Mrs Gravelle's father) was the headmaster, my great-aunt, Gwen Morgan was a teacher and my mother Mair Gravelle attended the school without a break from being a babe-in-arms in the mid-twenties until she left for Llandovery School.

Having retired to mid-Wales I have at long last had time to learn the language and had the pleasure of chatting to Richard Morgan (Post Office) on my last visit in his own language.

I promised Richard some old 16mm films Tadcu (W J Gravelle) took in the 50s. When I fulfil my promise, I'll see if I can post them on the internet with a link on this site.

Reading the e-mail from Huw re his family and especially his reference to the teachers in his family reminds me of another member of his family who provided an insight into a feature of rural village life now long gone. I refer to his great uncle Dai Francis Morgan who had what we chidren called a slaughter house in Vicarage Road in the village. As children we often visited the slaughter house and watched with great interest the slaughter and cutting up of a variety of animals. When I told my wife and children of this they were aghastand stated that they couldn't understand why this proceedure took place and that I was fortunate that the experiences I had had not turned me into some homicidal maniac!

I also recall that the late Jeff Bryer uaed to assist Dai Francis Morgan with his 'trade'. Do any other residents of the village remember Dai Francis Morgan and his slaughter house?

Re: Queen's Square
Posted by Aneurin Williams on 26/11/2013, 5:17 pm, in reply to "Re: Queen's Square"

I do recall Dai Francis as I lived next door to Jeff Bryer in Church Street and the bottom of our garden was up against the slaughterhouse. I have memories of several slaughter events but my most vivid recollection was as a Salvage Steward during the latter years of the war.We were a small group of young children who on a saturday morning would do the round of the village to collect ant waste paper, fabrics, etc ( WHO SAID RECYCLING WAS A MODERN TREND? ) in an old pram and there on a regular basis was a large bone from Dai Francis. Thinking back it must have been a cow,s leg bone because as children, it was massive. I still have the gold coloured steward badge that we were given in around 1943 or so.

Also, Dai Francis became involved with another of the Llangadog annual events when he hosted one of the regular horse racing stables from the Midlands over many years. I recall being given many a ride over a number of years

Dear Mair,

Greetings from the island of Malta and have just read with great interest your connections with Rhiwddu Farm at Gwynfe.
You may be interested to know that it was the Davies side of my family that farmed both Nant y Moch and Rhiwddu Farms.
As a Genealogist myself I hope to look forward to word from you in due course on this area and compare notes.

With Kindest Regards,

Hello Stephen
Many thanks for posting a response.
My 3rd great grandfather Thomas Williams was recorded as a tenant farmer in the tythe maps in 1838.I have tracked the census forms to follow the progress of my family in Rhiwddu. In 1841 Thomas Williams and his family were at Rhiwddu. Also in 1851. In 1861 census Thomas and his wife Elizabeth were at Cwmrhiwddu and Evan, one of the sons was farming Rhiwddu ,living there with his wife and family.Another of Thomas Williams' sons became my 2nd great grandfather and moved to and settled in Brynamman.By 1871 the Thomas family were at Rhiwddu, but I believe Ann Thomas was a daughter of Thomas Williams??
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards

Hi Susan
Thanks for posting a reply. I have Anne Williams (1814) marrying David Thomas on 23.12.1842 at Capel Gwynfe.Does this match up with your information on the family? My family stems from John one of Anne's brothers.I was brought up in Brynamman and now live in Ystradgynlais. Do you live in Brynamman?
Look forward to hearing from you.

Would your John Williams have been born around 1830? We seem to have the same family. My uncle Eric Thomas had been researching the Thomas and Williams line from Gwynfe, but he had more information on the Thomas line. John Williams was Anne Williams' brother. Anne Williams from Rhiwddu was my great great grandmother. I was brought up in Brynaman also. Firstly at School Rd, then at Cwmgarw Rd, I am 63 this year. You are Mary Jones, brought up in Brynaman - where there? We need to get together. Wyt ti'n siarad Cymraeg?

Hi Mike
Yes, I'm descended from Thomas Williams, Rhiwddu, via his daughter Anne Williams who was your John Williams' brother. Your Mary Anne Williams was a sister to William Williams (Billo)?
Where do you live now and who was your father? You must also be related to Mair Jones (nee Williams) from Ystrad?

Hi Susan
I had forgot to check for a reply on this message board until an e mail from Mair Jones Ystrad reminded me to do so.She would be a second cousin of my father Noel Jones although they have never met.I have met her a couple of times. My father Noel Jones was born in Gwaun Cae Gurwen in 1937,although at the time his father John Jones(son of David Jones Pantycelyn and Mary Anne Williams)was head master of Myddfai village school. The story of the children of John Jones is quite a sad one ,and if you let me know your e mail address I can expand on it.My e mail address is ragleth@googlemail.com.
Also with regards to the Jones (Pantycelyn )side of my family,I beleive they were originally from a property called Pantycelyn which lay between Gorstoe and Penywaun.Penywaun was inhabited by an Isaac family. Were they also your ancestors and do you know where these ptoperties might have been.I look forward to hearing from you
